Icon Analysis of the Pink Ribbon

The Pink Ribbon is worn and displayed by many who support breast cancer research. It is a recognizable icon to many who have not even had any direct connection with breast cancer. October has been known as the Breast Cancer Awareness month since 1985 (Pink Ribbon Inc, 2009).

There is controversy as to the origination of the Pink Ribbon because it is noted as being handed out to all participants in the Komen Race for the Cure in New York City in 1991 (Pink Ribbon Inc, 2009), but became widely known when Self magazine and Estee Lauder teamed up and published and distributed pink ribbons. It is noted that when the ribbon idea was introduced to Self magazine it was not introduced as pink ribbon but rather a peach ribbon (Pink Ribbon Inc, 2009). Alexandra Penney, Self magazine’s chief editor connected with Estee Lauder Company in 1992 and made the ribbon altercation (Pink Ribbon Inc, 2009). Estee Lauder handed out Pink Ribbons at their counters coinciding with Self magazine’s October publication of Breast Cancer Awareness Month (Pink Ribbon Inc, 2009). Either way, this ribbon has become an international icon.

With this icon, hundreds of millions of dollars have been raised to assist with the research of the ominous cancer (Danziger, 2009). It has brought forth the much needed awareness of early detection by self examinations and regular screenings (Danziger, 2009). There are several companies that donate by selling altered products or images on special occasions. They do this by including the Pink Ribbon on the package or the product itself to clearly show that they support and will donate to the Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation with the selling of the particular product.

This icon is used in many charity events to raise money for the research and awareness push. The Pink Ribbon is worn proudly by supporters and survivors along with family members and friends who have had a loved one who has either won or lost the vicious battle.
